As we prepare for the CNN program about Martin Luther King, Jr. tonight, I predict MLK will even in death help to bring the dream he spoke of more than 40 years ago come true. Although Obama took some blows during the Wright storm, the MLK story is going to draw comparisons between the two. Obama's recent speech on race will be referenced and this is going to give his campaign a big boost as he prepares for the PA primary. I will be interested in seeing the numbers after this special.

You Said It

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

President Ernest Bai Koroma has been calling on Sierra Leoneans for a change of attitude. On Wednesday, Vice President Samuel Sam Sumana launched the Attitudinal Change project at the Miatta conference hall in Freetown. To know what ordinary people think about attitudinal change, our reporter
Saidu Bah sought their views.

‘Nelson Mandela'

I am very happy for the launching of this attitudinal change by President Koroma. We are looking forward to see changes in the attitudes of the president, cabinet ministers and other civil servants then we the poor people can easily emulate the good example of the president or else it will be the same “boku tok.”

Ibrahim Bangura

It is a step in the right direction for Sierra Leoneans to change our behavioral pattern but the problem lies with the authorities who do the wrong things with impunity, while the masses suffer the consequences.

If the president means business he must ensure that there are penalties meted out on violators of the campaign.

Mohamed H Barrie

The change of attitude campaign trumpeted by the president is just another means to eat money. If they are serious they most first of all stop underage children from watching pornographic movies and control the dress code of some of our girls who dress half-naked.

The government must also ensure that good morals are taught in schools and inculcate the culture of “it is my business, not government's business as usual” then we can talk about change of attitude for the development of the country.

Marie Bangura

It is true that Sierra Leoneans have bad attitude but the government is responsible for this because we are yet to see the brightest example from the authorities, particularly in the areas of cleanliness and dispensation of justice. Poor people don't have rights in Sierra Leone. We the poor people comprise the bulk of the population but we suffer the most.

Francess Lahai

I am very happy with the president's campaign for all Sierra Leoneans to change their attitude. It is a step in the right direction but the problem lies with this government. As you can see in this city we have so many prostitutes and armed robbers but the government is not doing any thing about them. Look at the streets they are full of garbage and every body knows about it.

Leader of the Peoples Movement for Democratic Change has blamed the 'northern Temne dominated' All Peoples Congress led-government of chronic tribalism, a development that may defeat the purpose for which the two parties had earlier struck a deal.

Lawyer Charles Francis Margai, a Mende by tribe, Saturday addressed party supporters at Dama Road in the eastern district headquarter town of Kenema, during which he ruled that the APC government was guilty of tribalism to the highest degree.

"We fought against the Sierra Leone Peoples Party government because of the suppression it meted out on the people. And we supported the APC in the runoff election so that they can put an end to tribalism," he said.

He added: "I regret to inform you that we have not achieved that goal yet. It seems tribalism has now risen its ugly head in our society. If you are not from the north you have no credentials for appointments." Margai observed that despite the abundance of resources the country has it cannot succeed with tribalism. He expressed hopes to talk to President Ernest Bai Koroma on how some of his ministers openly practise tribalism.

The firebrand politician dismissed claims that they supported APC because of political appointments but insisted that the people were hungry and needed jobs badly.

However, efforts to get APC secretary-general Victor Foh, himself a Mende from Jimi Bargbor in the Bo district, southern province, proved abortive. He is respected as a politician for maintaining his allegiance with the APC, a party that has its stronghold in the north.

Reappearance of election thuggery

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The National Election Watch (NEW) has reported that there had been a reappearance of election thuggery during the recently concluded bye-elections.
NEW explained that in constituencies 49 in Port Loko and 103 in Western Area an organized group of about 30 men dressed in black attire in two Hilux vans referred to as “APC Election Task Force” created tensions in certain polling stations in both constituencies.

NEW stated that, “the APC Task Force’s presence was considered intimidating, and their reason for being there was unclear”. NEW also revealed that violence was reported in Port Loko where this task force complacency in responding was disappointing.
They pointed out that this behaviour was outrageous and should not be condoned, especially when the country was preparing for the local council elections.

NEW said they condemned this action and called on the leadership of the ruling party to investigate this action of thuggery and lawlessness, adding also that “Sierra Leoneans’ interests now lie in development and the rule of law and the government of the day should ensure national interests above their party ones”.

NEW also reported that the March 29th parliamentary by-elections had a very low voter turnout of less than 30% in all of the constituencies 103,49,42,28.
They however stated that NEC officials were in all the constituencies and worked well to ensure that voters had no problems during the vote. They also said voting materials were adequate in all the polling stations.

So you chose Charles.

Good for you.

I stand by JEL, the no-nonsense man, professionally.

But can you really vouch for the fact that the "good working relationship hetween himself[Charles] and the apc" is the reason he is complaining, now that he is no longer a powerbroker?

The "powerbroker" concept is only valid at election time. Once the winner is brokered into power the obligation is really no longer enforceable. In other words, Charles can complain all he wants, but Ernest 'don't' have to listen, or act. Coz he [Ernest] and his APC got the power and clout presently, and four and a half more years into the future. He ain't got to pay Charles any mind, never mind how "close" they really are.

"... With 10 MPs 4 CABINET MINISTERS and 2 DEPUTIES under his belt..."

So?

APC has a majority in that House. And through deceptive practices, as is their politics, they are going to do their darnedest to retain it.

The Delimitation process that constitutes part of the preparatory activities to be conducted by Aunty ChristianaT is already badly mired in controversy, so its effectiveness will not be corrupt-free in the minds of many, considering the political reputation of her patrons.

[Why would you forge the signature of a bona fide signatory to a document / report to be submitted to Parliament, and expect to be taken seriously in terms of transparency, and honesty / truthfulness / objectivity?], for you to think that it would be approved?] Go back to the drawing board. And let Sissi Daphne be present this time around to sign her signature, if she agrees.

Anyway, to encapsulate my point of contention; no matter how good the "working relationship" is, Ernest has the upper hand on Charles. So he ain't got to listen to him when Charles say:

. minimize "northernization"

. minimize the overt tribalism in appropriating
opportunities

. adhere to the democratic practices you inherited,
and improve on them for the benefit of the masses

. remember that vous etes the president of SaLon, and
not of the dying red sun, per se

. always look out for the best interests of the
peoples you govern, and you'd be rewarded

Will he listen, and act?

1. Cell Phones More Dangerous Than Cigarettes and Asbestos

A top Australian neurosurgeon says cell phones may cause more cancer in the near future than smoking or asbestos. Dr. Vini Khurana, who conducted an extensive review of the link between cell phones and brain cancer said using cell phones for at least ten years could more than double the risk of developing deadly brain cancer. Since three times as many people use cell phones as smoke, cell phones will soon emerge as a major killer.

“It is anticipated that this danger has far broader public health ramifications than asbestos and smoking, and directly concerns all of us, particularly the younger generation, including very young children,” Dr. Khurana wrote.

Dr. Khurana says there has been an increase in brain tumors in people who have used cell phones heavily for a long time on the same side of the head as their “preferred ear” for making calls. He believes it has been difficult to prove a direct link between cell phone usage and brain tumors because a malignant brain tumor might take between ten and twenty years to develop, and the general public hasn’t been using cell phones long enough to effectively study the risk.

That will soon change. “In the years 2008-2012, we will have reached the appropriate length of follow-up time to being to definitely observe the impact of this global technology on brain tumor incidence rates,” Khurana says.

Hello Mr. Kanu:

Since you have a direct line to State House, could you please spread the word and spur action. May 13 this year is a deadline under which nations can claim and extend their marine territory under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Currently, every country's territory extends 200 nautical miles. Article 76 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (which again, expires on May 13) gives countries the opportunity to claim further territory beyond the existing 200 sea miles, but generally not more than 350 sea miles from the shoreline.

Why is this important? To the extent that there might be offshore oil in Sierra Leone, we need to make sure we own the territory. We don't want a situation where oil is found, but it is 201 miles from our shore line thus we can't further our development from the bonanza, because we don't "own" the oil.

I am contacting the SL and UN ambassadors in DC, but please do your part. The President, VP and Minister of Mines should be made aware of this and hopefully they take it seriously and do something about it. I don't know what the process is, but I think it is just a simple procedure of our UN ambassador signing a piece of paper. I am sure they would know what steps to take to get more information and do what's neccessary.

Thank you,
Sam

Tuesday, April 01, 2008 - The Ministry of Mineral Resources

Emergency Meeting

An emergency Cabinet meeting last Friday approved Mineral Resources Minister Alhaji Abubakar Jalloh’s proposals to review all existing mining agreements to ensure optimum benefit to Sierra Leoneans from the exploitation of the country’s immense mineral wealth.

The minister’s proposals include:-
1. Linking Mineral Resources Exploitation with Infrastructural Development.

2. All major and minor projects should contribute to the infrastructural development of the area in which they operate; e.g. the construction of roads, railway, ports where appropriate, clinics, schools etc.
These will be part of the development/benefit to the community in which they operate and the nation as a whole.

Fiscal Regime: - All taxes, royalties, custom duties etc. will be harmonized with the regimes of the sub-region, particularly with the Mano River Union countries.

Government will seek to acquire equity participation in all major mining projects. A workable percentage will be discussed but a 40%/60% (Government/Company) would be a suitable recommendation.

Social/Environmental Issues: - All major mining projects should adhere strictly to the principles and practice of the EITI (environmental protection agreement); should operate with best international practice that will be sustainable in the region and community in which they operate; have due consideration for the protection of the environment;

Training Scholarships - youths to be trained in training colleges and universities in geology, engineering and related studies.
counterparts training
“Qualified Sierra Leoneans will also have to be attached to mining companies to ensure that they are counterparts to expatriates”.
Several mining companies already adhere to some of these proposals. But other ‘fly-by-night’ operation, as our source described them, would have to abide by the new laws.
Koidu Holdings matter discussed
The Jenkins-Johnson report on Koidu Holdings was discussed at the emergency Cabinet meeting, we were informed.
Most of the recommendations were accepted and the 1995 Lease Agreement signed by the NPRC would certainly be reviewed our source said.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This is good news indeed from the Salone mining front.
The actual execution of such lofty mining policy changes, will definitely lead to a better Sierra LEONE.

The confirmation of the value of our mineral reserves........How much are our 'proven and confirmed
reserves' worth?. Over a billion dollars in the case of GOLD alone!!

Ah ah...LEVERAGE THE VALUE OF OUR MINERALS TOWARDS our National developmental objectives.

Where is PAT BOCKARIE of SLID fame?

Their progress in scaling the economic and political heights is very commendable. But why not the other ministeries? Why Ministry of Natural Resources predominantly?

Is La Guinee benefitting extraordinarily through the 'tribality' in this appointment?

Is this the reason the border town of Yenga was seized by the Guinean Army?

Is the occupation force serving as a secure turnstile for the smuggling activities of the "aliens" from this sister country, and other countries in the MRU?

Just asking questions. No harm intended at all in asking these kinds of questions.

Jamal Shallop's Millions of Dollars Contracts Strategy......Play Squash and Golf With The President
Posted by on Apr 2, 2008, 02:15

It is now clear that as a businessman one is sure of bagging contracts from the All Peoples Congress Ernest Koroma’s government if he/she is a member of the Squash and Golf club to which the president is an active member. Most business individuals, especially Lebanese businessmen are now members of the Squash and Golf Club in Freetown not for the purpose or the feel of the game but the sole reason of bagging contracts from the various government ministers and departments, which in most cases they always succeeded in getting.

A case in point which is attracting media attention is the award of the World Bank Ministry of Health Drug supply contract to Imres Pharmacy owned by Jamal Shallop. Over the past years, commencing with the NPRC government, Jamal Shallop has been the “contract king” to the SLPP and finally the APC government that he has recently bagged two different contracts running into millions of dollars financed by the World Bank.

Jamal Shallop, once a formidable financier of the 2007 SLPP election is cleverly replenishing his battered account using the squash and Golf Club connections to achieve his objective.

What appears amazing is that Jamal Shallop is always around with any government in power and would use government officials and Presidents for his personal benefits. The recent World Bank contract is no exception in which he used officials at the Ministry of Health and the squash and Golf Club connection to achieve his objectives.

According to documentary evidence, Jamal Shallop submitted names of seven companies for the World Bank drug contract and with key insiders at the committee, two of the contracts were awarded to his company and the third to Hamdaleye, a company he has shares in. Prior to this recent World Bank contract, Jamal Shallop had supplied a “CT Scan” which he priced at over one million dollars during the administration of the SLPP government and when the government lost the 2007 election, he used friends of the President to make payment to him with promises of attractive commission.

The Minister of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Soccoh Kabia who put up stiff resistant to append his signature for payment to be made to Jamal Shallop regretted his action when orders from somewhere compelled him to sign the document, and Mr. Shallop was paid over one Million Dollars for an equipment that cost less than $500,000. The two drug contracts recently bagged amounted to $202,439.20.

At the Ministry of Defence, names of companies owned by Jamal Shallop are all over their documents, if it is not Imress, it would be Ramesco or companies that he is strongly associated with to supply drugs or logistics. At the Ministry of Agriculture, his companies top the list of local contractors. At the Ministry of Finance, there is no document for payment to local as well as international contractors that his company (ies) is not benefiting from. The questions now posed by many Sierra Leoneans are whether the previous governments and the present APC government are afraid of Jamal Shallop and what makes him powerful than other contractors especially Sierra Leoneans. It would be recalled that two years ago, the then president; Ahmed Tejan Kabbah cancelled several contracts including the contract for Agricultural equipment for food security that this same individual won under dubious circumstances.

Solomon Ekummah Dominic Berewa, BA. Hons (Durham), Dip.Ed., B.L (Grays Inn, London); Sierra Leone’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice; Chief Government Negotiator, Lome Peace Talks July,1999.

A short biography, by Ambrose Ganda, editor of Focus of Sierra Leone.

NO one should doubt the intellectual ability of Mr Solomon Ekummah Dominic Berewa, Sierra Leone’s redoubtable attorney-general and minister of justice, and chief government negotiator at 1999's Lomé Peace Conference. What he lacks in political judgement – a fact attested by his singularly dogmatic insistence on the rulebook (i.e. the Constitution) as opposed to the practical things that concern ordinary mortals - he makes up by his erudition and frequent bouts of unbridled self-righteous indignation. I do not know the linguistic derivation of his middle name 'Ekummah', but assuming it is Mende, which is his as well as my mother tongue, it would connote defiance, and in its literal translation means 'won't agree'.

He is the longest serving minister holding the same portfolio that he held at the start of the Kabbah presidency in March 1996. He was appointed Attorney General by President Kabbah following, and most probably because of, their close friendship formed between 1992 and 1996 when they shared membership of the National Advisory Council (NAC). The council was created by the illegal NPRC military government to advise on constitutional and political matters. In effect, however, the junta cleverly used it to deflect charges of unconstitutional and illegal behaviour. With Kabbah as chairman and Berewa one of its leading legal luminaries, the council ostensibly had immense clout with the NPRC junta. The irony has not been lost on the political opponents of both Kabbah and Berewa, especially on those who were prosecuted between1998 and 1999 for allegedly serving and collaborating with the AFRC military junta during its seven-month rule in 1997.

The NAC placed considerable reliance for, among other things, the redrafting of the Sierra Leone Constitution (a product that was later rejected by the soldiers boys), on Berewa and another fallen companion, the matter-of-fact barrister Mr George Banda-Thomas who was also appointed minister of information and broadcasting and, by the time of the AFRC coup, was the minister of trade and industry. Banda-Thomas, who is currently being touted as a potential challenger to Kabbah’s second-term presidential ambitions, parted company with the government during its exile in Guinea and settled in the Gambia, allegedly because of serious disagreements over aspects of some of the strategies that were being planned for the return of the exiled government.

Berewa, on the contrary, dutifully stayed on and loyally served his President. As the senior law officer, he was involved at every stage of the plans and allegedly, according to exiled residents in Conakry at the time, the vindictive programmes that were hatched for the restoration, return and rehabilitation of the overthrown government. He was the exiled government's principal negotiator at the meetings that were held, ostensibly, to give credibility to its publicly declared aim of engaging in peaceful dialogue to end the AFRC’s usurpation. But, in effect, these meetings were smokescreens for buying time because plans had in the meantime been laid and were well advanced for the restoration of the Kabbah government by military force. During those meetings he came across as a difficult, phlegmatic and, according to one diplomatic source, ‘characteristically opinionated and inflexible’ negotiator.

For his hard-line and seeming obduracy, Berewa has already paid a high price because, in today's Sierra Leone, he is faced with an array of implacable enemies, spoken and unspoken, who are wide-spread but firmly embedded among a core of kindred northern and eastern Sierra Leonean ethnic groups, especially Temnes, Limbas and Konos. This is not surprising for a man who has established a reputation for courting controversy and adversity. For example, he is credited with single-handedly, and single-mindedly, pulling out all the stops to secure the arrest and detention of thousands of his own countrymen and countrywomen for their alleged collaboration with RUF rebels and the illegal AFRC Junta of 1997. He prosecuted and successfully secured the conviction of scores of them for treason. The trials were based on some of the most perverse legal amendments ever in Sierra Leone's legal history, drafted and enacted purposefully, with retrospective provisions, to secure the conviction of the accused. Some of those convicted included 26 leading junta figures, including one female. The majority of those executed were of northern tribal origin, hence the depth of animosities towards him from this section of Sierra Leone’s politically fractious society. Others, mainly civilians, who were awaiting execution, such as the former Secretary to the President before the AFRC coup, Mr Sheku A T Bayoh (a Mende), or the internationally renowned and respected agriculturalist and gentleman Professor Willie Taylor, formerly of Njala University College – a Creole, were later set free under a general amnesty in late 1999.

Berewa is a self-made man from a simple and respectable background. Early in his life, with which I was closely associated from our primary schooldays, he showed glowing evidence of his brainpower. He was in a class of his own and easily the favourite student of my late father, Pa J T Ganda, the headmaster of the Sacred Heart RC Primary School, in Serabu, Bo District. As far as I know, to his dying day, Pa Ganda regarded Berewa as one of his two best and brightest students ever, in his long and memorable teaching career; the other being Mr Benedict Josie Morrison, who went on to become a lecturer in French in the Ivory Coast.

"Brer Solo", as we used to call him in those days, started school late and by the time he joined us at Serabu, from the infant school at Yengema village about 4 miles away, he must have been possibly 10 or 12 years old. I was then a tender child of so and so. Being much older than the rest of us, he had a very quick grasp of the rudiments of every subject that was introduced to us - Arithmetic, Geography, English Grammar, Composition, Civics, Nature Study, Religious Knowledge, Drawing, etc (as these subjects were known then), and the mandatory 'hot mental' which preceded every morning's start of class.

In all, I guess he spent not more than four years in primary school. In those days there were three terms and the school year ended at Christmas. The class stages were Class 1, Class 2, and Standards 1 to 6. He was, as we used to say colloquially, 'double promoted' (I believe) two times. He joined us in Class 2 and was promoted along with us to Standard 1, coming first in that year's exams. But after just two terms, he was promoted to Standard 2 to complete the third term, coming top of his class again. He moved on to Standard 3, still unbeaten and, as far as I can recall, again got promoted to Standard 4 before the end of that year. It was then that the late Pa Ganda took a gamble and decided that instead of waiting for Berewa to proceed to Standard 5, which was the norm, he would submit him that year for the selective common entrance examination for admission to secondary school. The late old man’s hunch was right. Solo excelled and scored one of the best results in the Southern Province that year, a feat that gave our already famous school more laurels to celebrate. The year was 1954. He was instantly enrolled by the newly founded Roman Catholic secondary school, Christ the King College (CKC), in Bo, among its very first intake of pupils. I followed him there three years later, where we were both boarders.

His classmates included Mr Gabriel Amara who later became principal of the school; Mr Aloysius B Momoh a respected senior civil servant who sadly died in March this year; the distinguished and experienced civil servant and career diplomat Mr Francis Karemo, tragically massacred along with his wife Lois, by marauding gangsters in the heady first days following the AFRC coup in 1997; the former senior laboratory technician at Njala University College the late Mr Leo Noni, and others. We all shared one thing in common, namely, a quiet reverence for Solo's awesome intellectual ability. He was studious, concentrated and unflappably focused like a beaver at work. He would keep his legs in a bucket of very cold water (I saw it!) just to keep awake while 'cogging' (swotting, to you) till daybreak.

In those days, CKC had one the strictest disciplinarians as its principal, the late Rev Father Michael Corbett, who was also its founder. He made no distinction between pupils - brilliant or not, sons of the famous or of the lowliest, senior or junior. He placed everybody under the same strict regime and tested their endurance, or lack of it, to its limits. Berewa, the bright lad, was one of those pushed to the upper limits.

This priest also had a habit of putting us through rigorous impromptu mental tests, which we very much detested. His usual routine was to shuffle his way into the study room where about 90 of us – boarders – would be doing our afternoon or evening study. He wore only soft shoes so we did not hear the sound of his approaching footsteps. He then randomly picked up an unsuspecting pupil's library book, making sure it was not one of the prescribed textbooks. After speed-reading through a few pages he would insert an improvised page marker - a ruler perhaps. Then picking up an abandoned chalk end, he would write out two or three paragraphs on the blackboard.

With the board covered up, he would do a half-turn on his toes to face the class. Clearing his throat intentionally for attention, which he got instantly, he would invite everyone, irrespective of grade or seniority, to write the passage down. "I want you all to memorise the passage on the board for tomorrow afternoon (Sunday)” he would say. It was one of his rare moments of grace. Sometimes, the set target time for such mental gymnastics would be limited to 30 minutes or even less, there and then. But when passages were much longer he gave till the next day. With that he would leave the room as quietly as he had come in.

On one particular occasion that I can vividly recall, judgement day arrived without fanfare. Fr Corbett strolled into the classroom unannounced, in his usual self-effacing manner, and picked up the book from which he had reproduced the test passage on the previous day.

"Put away your books,” he ordered in his usual squeaky tone. His right hand, armed with a ruler, left us in no doubt that he would readily deal a deadly blow on the anatomy of the would-be defaulter. Lifting his eyes away from the choice page, he looked around purposefully, sweeping them sideways across the length and breadth of the study room, and resting them briefly on one or other of the petrified faces in front of him. You could tell from the intensity of the look on his face, that the unlucky object, or rather the victim, of his deliberate random search had already been identified. Suddenly, his eyes assumed the configuration of a fixed gaze on that area at the back of the room occupied by the senior boys. The silence that followed was impenetrable and ethereal. You could hear the pin drop.

“Berewa, recite” came the barely distinct order, which was greeted by a clearly audible mass exhalation of relief from the rest of us. Solo stood to his feet unsteadily, at first, and then straightened up. We were confident that he would sail through easily. But to our eternal shock and surprise, the unexpected happened!

Like a gramophone needle that gets stuck in the groove of an old wax record, he went into staccato mode, in painful stutters. "May.. May… became… May became…May became [Long pause]…Maaaaaay… May… became… May became…"

Then followed an agonising long silence. The priest's patience seemed to be irreparably frayed.

"Remain standing, Berewa" he said tersely to him.

For the rest of us, the torment that followed was like the approach of creeping death, reminiscent of the torment of the twelve disciples when Jesus revealed that one of them would betray the Son of Man. "Is it I Lord?" they asked pleadingly, each to a man. We waited anxiously, each one of us in the full expectation of being the target of the now outstretched arm and ruler. It was decidedly pointed at my half-expectant face!

"Ambrose, stand up and recite."

Fr Corbett had a penchant for creating melodrama, sometimes bordering on mischief. It did not matter to him if it embarrassed anyone, regardless of seniority. It must have been the only reason why I, a junior, was selected, possibly to embarrass Brer Solo so he would push himself even harder in future. How cruel that such a task should fall on me, I thought!

I stood up and also started nervously but quickly managed to steady out with confidence. “May became June. [Long pause.] June drew to a rainless close. [Long pause.] The monsoons this year crossed the Arabian seas in fitful squalls; that sight in which Indian poets rejoice. The caravans, heavily laden, headed along once dusty tracts towards the towering Himalayan peaks in the distance…" etc., etc.

I sailed through my rendition alright. I had spent the good part of the night memorising the stuff. As for Brer Solo, he was afterwards asked by the Principal to “go up to my room” which was a euphemism for being sent to his office for punishment. It was the routine fate from which nobody was spared.

This regime worked. Berewa and his classmates worked doubly hard. They gained fantastic results for CKC, in the school's first attempt at the West African School Certificate (GCE) examinations. Both he and the late Aloysius Bapoto Momoh scored solid Grade 2s. For Brer Solo personally, the result was disappointing. He had aimed for, and was expected to attain, a Grade 1 and missed it by just a couple of points. But he and his colleagues effectively put CKC in contention with established schools such as the Bo Government School. They set the standard for the school's future scholarly achievements.

Berewa went on to Fourah Bay College and gained a BA Honours degree and a Diploma in Education. He taught for a few years before coming to England to study at the Inns of Court School of Law (the practising barristers' main training school) here in London. He did this in record time, winning the Law of Trust prize. He was admired and respected by his colleagues. Some of them used to gather around him, or visit his home in the evenings, at revision time for his help because of his good grasp of some of the legal conundrums. He was always prepared to share his knowledge.

He is contemptuous of many of his professional colleagues and has described them variously as intellectually vacuous. Never a man to be put off by criticism, and totally convinced of his own judgement and intellect, this gloriously irreverent man is not one ever to show the slightest remorse or self doubt (at least in public). He marches on regardless, like a kamikaze pilot on a mission to self-destruct. But his still clever brain appears unable to function outside a laboured logic that, at times, threatens the normality and ordinariness of the life buzzing around him. He once conveyed high promise of becoming a Catholic priest but dropped the idea later in his life. He is well settled family man. He is, though, a practising (some say) devout Roman Catholic, who has chaired his local parish council and often serves as the representative of the Catholic Mission in Sierra Leone on several councils of state and religion.

I have always been very fond of Berewa, whom I look upon as an elder brother. One of my first ports of call during my infrequent visits to Sierra Leone was to his home, or to his chambers, where he had a prolific legal practice with his very close buddy Garvas Betts, a brilliant lawyer and Oxford graduate, who died in1999 after a long illness. Their partnership outshone most in Sierra Leone, and stood as living proof that a countryman and a Creole could work closely together to achieve the highest standards in their profession.

However, since his political debut Brer Solo has managed to dent my once unquestioned admiration for his intellect. The problem is that he is a technocrat who is trying too hard to play the role of a politician. The experiment has evidently not worked. This is not to question his undoubted ability to handle his portfolio, especially as Attorney General. But I have to say I have been rudely shocked by his obsessive pursuit of revenge and retribution – his idea of justice - using the law as his weapon. He has made many mistakes and too many foes in the process. He has dug himself into a corner from which he will need the wisdom of his namesake, King Solomon, to extricate himself.

I have heard him being variously described as bloodthirsty, vengeful and unforgiving. But paradoxically, he is not all that this partial public image of him appears to portray. He is a very friendly man when you get to know him, extremely helpful, quiet (when he is not in court), and close to his family and friends. He has a huge sense of humour, enjoys a good laugh and is a most compelling raconteur. But, these days, 'compassionate' or 'forgiving' are not terms that people readily apply to him.

As for modesty, he has more than once been forced to eat his words, as when, prior to the Lomé Agreement, he savaged with ritualistic relish the suggestion that his government might involve rebels in Cabinet. Berewa pleaded the Constitution, as a bar, to make his point. Only then for him, as chief government negotiator, to conclude a deal which did exactly that! See here for my report of his admission and explanation at a meeting in London in July 1999, with President Kabbah in attendance, following the signing of the Lomé Agreement. For once, Berewa was forced to face reality and was man enough to accept it. It should be a signal lesson for him.

I am firmly convinced that Sierra Leone can still benefit from this man's undeniable gift and huge intellect. But Brer Solo needs to cool down and find time to reflect, then decide what he wants to become from this moment onwards. Whether he wants to establish himself as a cult figure for hate or as a catalyst for positive change in a tolerant new Sierra Leone, free of the prejudices of the past, which understands and appreciates that human beings are different and endowed with qualities that vary from person to person. That being clever and learned is not all that matters in the end, and is most certainly not co-terminus with being prudent. Berewa is a clever man but he has not proved to be a wise man. Clever people live to learn and acquire wisdom. Brer Solo still has time to do so. And the lessons of life won’t stop there because, as they say, even the wise live to learn.

"...For your information, I returned to Massachusetts only yesterday after
approximately a month's visit to Sierra Leone. I traveled around the country
ex! tensively but quietly. I talked to countless people of various political
persuasion as well as with ordinary citizens; and I drank poyo in countless
villages. I even ate palm oil-fried fresh fish in Gbondapi, Pujehun District
and Zakitomboi over native rice everwhere.

I can assure you that my conclusion is that Mr. Margai and his PMDC are minor
and declining factors in our political landscape. While Mr. Berewa has
problems, support for the SLPP is slowly growing and if Berewa campaigns
properly with a clear message with a clean competent team, he and the SLPP are
likely to emerge victorious come 2007.

There is no doubt that Mr. Margai has followers in Bo and in Freetown and
maybe in Kenema township and in Koidu. In all these places his support is
contracting and is limited to mostly low grade noisemakers - san san boys,
honda drivers, ex-combatants, carwash boys, etc. In Kenema, the small
pro-Margai group there is silently dissappearing ! and its leadership discouraged
by PMDC thin leadership base. The absence of senior personalities around Margai
has caused some of his campaign workers in the Bo area to start to drift back to
the SLPP. Others are vehemently denying that they were ever with Mr. Margai in
the first place even they they admit they are unhappy with the SLPP leadership.

Elsewhere else in SL, Mr. Margai appears to me as an absolute non-factor.
>From what I have observed, Mr. Margai appears to me as merely an internet
wonder based on support mainly from academia abroad.

People in SL now realize that the PMDC is a crude attempt to hyjack the Third
Force Movement that was much talked about in SL in 2004/5 simply because Margai
must lead. I heard Margai himself state over Radio 98.1 last August that what
Sierra Leone needs is a benevolent dictator. I am told by some in the PMDC
that Margai acts within this organization as though he is that dictator . As
far ! as I know, many of our people are leary of dictators, benevolent or
otherwise.

Second, Mr. Margai's recent prior association with Omery Golley has damaged
part of his support base. People remember RUF cruelties as well as Golley's
leadership role and are completely unsympathetic to him. Mr. Golley is, of
course, entitled to the lawyer of his choice especially in defending against
capital criminal charges. And while Mr. Margai showed courage in agreeing to
defend a loathsome character once in the leadership of the dreaded RUF, he
showed very poor judgment in accepting the assignment from Golley in the first
place. This drove some of his support away.

Third, to make matters worse, Mr. Margai has now opportuinistically bowed to
pressure from within his camp and now appears to have unceremoniously abandoned
his client and his case. This very recent decision became public during the
last days of my visit has created the impression that M! r. Margai is
unprincipled and opportunistically bends as the political wind blows. Such
makes for poor leadership.

Fourth, the impression is widespread in the places I visited and among the
people I spoke to, that Mr. Margai is in an unholy alliance with the APC. This
widespread belief may not be based on facts but that is irrelevant at this
point. What matters is the perception of the public.

Those members of the public - in both the North and East and the South - who
remember what they perceived as the callous notoriety of long-running APC-led
pre-war governments appear to be systematically keeping away from Mr. Margai in
a desperate attempt to prevent another APC victory. Fear of another APC
government is endemic in many parts of Sierra Leone.

Fifth, the CKC Incident of circa November 17, 2005 has rightly or wrongly
created the unfortunate legacy that the PMDC is suffering from leadership
immaturity and unnecessary recklessness! and that the party is populated by
riff-raff types.

Six, as for people like myself, we see Mr. Margai as a lightweight allowing
himself to be sorrounded by a number of notorious personalities at once
opportunistic, stupid, crooked and up to no good - the exact type of remedial
personalities that the Third Force hopefuls had wanted to permanently eliminate
from public service. The fact that those remedial undesirables continue to be
visible in apparent senior position within the PMDC has thrown into extreme
question Mr. Margai's level of intelligence and his everyday commonsense.

Today, our country is a very peaceful place, even amidst fantastic poverty,
unsatisfied want, vast inconvenience, hardship and very poor national
leadership. But if there is widespread general consensus of any one issue then
that issue is that absolutely no physical violence is to be perpetrated against
the person of any political opponent or public official. The citizenship is
determined to let the forthcoming campaign and political contest be
violence-free and to let the voting take its natural course. The public
intends to peacefully submit to the winners.

I am therefore convinced that the report about the purported attempted
assassination of Mr. Margai is without any factual basis and I suspect that it
may have been deliberately planted to fool the public regarding how Margai is
perceived by his competititors. In my opinion, the purported Margai attempted
assassination report is not worth the ink used to print it let alone the
cheaper paper it is printed on.

The press in Sierra Leone needs to be nutured to meet professional standards.

Thanks once again for keeping in touch.

Sincerely,

John E. Leigh

Dr. Thomas,

i hold you in high regards because i see you as one of the most fair and balanced brothers on this forum. But such a question really make me believe that Margai has been hard done by. Now lets just look at the score so far between Margai the heavyweight and that diplomatic wind bag and baseless political reject Leigh.

Round 1. Leigh remortgaged his house and used all his saving to bribe kabba for an ambassadorial job. Margai was begged by Kaba to take a High Commissioner post to the UK. A more Senior job to what Leigh BARGAINED for. Though he Margai, turned it down.

Round 2. Leigh, the man who turned his official residence into a whore house was disgracefully sacked as ambassador by Kabba. Margai fling im resignation letter as cabinet minister nar kabba im face and told him up URS.

Round 3. Leigh, with all his humiliation at two consecutive CONBENTIONS could not dare to leave and even form a fantasy football club because he is baseless. All he did was to be disrespectful to his fellow countrymen by referring to them as LOW GRADE SAN SAN HUMAN BEINGS for choosing to exercised their freedom of choice. Hence my name as a protest for his rudeness. Margai on the other hand, left, formed a formidable force, attracting big hitters like the elder statesman the great Pa Javombo. Bra. Enviable and the notorious mammy sweh. Although they've both now gone their separate ways, back to their ancestral homes. With Mammy sweh oops blessing been initiated into the APC Task Force and now leading operations against opponents as Momoh Plaba, his new soko name.

Final Round. Whilst Leigh is now fighting Alpha Saidu Bangura on this forum, about who should lead the rudderless slpp in north America. Margai is back home playing squash, tennis and badminton with our President. And running things by remote control. With 10 MPs 4 CABINET MINISTERS and 2 DEPUTIES under his belt. With a lot more to come because of the good working relationship between himself and the apc, things can only get better.

With all honesty Dr.Thomas, will you really allow these two to square up? Nah! You cant be that unfair to THE LEADER OF THE PEOPLES MOVEMENT FOR DEMOCRATIC CHANGE.
Bless.

Thanks a lot for presenting your case in such a balance way. I will now retire to my chambers where I will consult some point of law. I will return soon to give a verdict.

* one day's supply of AIDS medication in sub-Saharan Africa is about $ 6.20. in Brazil it is 56 cents, because generic versions of the medication is produced by the govt. in that country.

*AIDS could shrink some African economies by up to 25 % over the next 15 years.

Does it really matter if Sam Sumana is a graduate or not? I find him very intelligent and can communicate very well, even better than Bush, a graduate from both Harvard and Yale. As a national leader what is now required of him is performance, and that he is providing as VP.

What did Berewa provide as a VP with degrees other than heartaches for husbands whose wives he laid with impunity, or for families of soldiers whose lives were cut short because he exercised too much discretion or the many slpp men and women whose dreams he shattered by failing to win a race that had been already handed to him on a silver platter?

This is not about Berewa. It is about VP Sam Sumana, a young man with a lot of political promise that will unite salone and make it better. "How long shall they kill our prophets...., and we just stand and look?

My heart goes to you, ma man-Sumana.

Five RUF Indictees at the special court have escaped from the Detention center and a Massive manhunt is going on as I speak. Speaking to the BBC this morning Lt Col Dick Small the commanding officer of the Irish Guards rapid deployment force situated in Monrovia and charged with responding to crises at the special court said that it appears as if the Indictees all members of the sacred "Kofon" Society had just slithered away by leaning on the retaining walls of their cells. Asked further about the Kofon society, Col Dick Small mentioned that the members of the sacred society do have magical powers which could make them disappear and transform themselves into other animals. Meanwhile reports from Jail officers was that three little birds were seen hovering over the prison facility this morning and obviously flew away.

A crack batalion of Sierra Leone forces under the command of Brigadier General Horatio Nelson is helping the Irish Guards hunt down the detainees. It is believed that they are armed with Facks and sling shots rather than guns since the intent is not to kill the birds but to Bring them back into the cage.

Stay tuned

It is surprising that anyone would raise a furour because Nigeria is paying business attention to Sierra Leone. Have we forgotten to very strong historical and cultural ties binding both countries? Have we forgotten the huge human and financial services made by Nigeria during our darkest hour, when the so called first World pretended to be blind to our sufferings, before being embarrassed into action, have we forgotten Nigeria's position as the economic powerhouse of West Africa? If Nigeria does not support Sierra Leone, that would mean something is seriously wrong. Let us not talk about acts of fraud perpetrated by a few Nigerians to typecast the entire nation. After all, some of the biggest financial scandals we have seen in recent era have been in the United States, in France, etc, etc.
We should move forward from the dark ages and applaud our Brothers when they are succesful and yearn to learn from them. Our own is our own, enough of economic myopia fed by the deceptions of the West that have kept us where we are. How are we ever going to build West Africa's joint economy to the level of the EU if we dont change this type of defeatist thinking? Shame indeed, and by the way, I a not Nigerian, but proudly an African.

CHANGE OF ATTITUDE? LET THE APC LEAD THE WAY!
Tuesday, April 01, 2008 - FRONT PAGE

There are few things more difficult in this world than ‘Changing People’s Attitudes’.
attitudes develop

Anyone who has made a serious study of society and social interaction between people would soon realise that Attitudes do not come out of thin air.
Attitudes are formed from the cradle, nutured by parents in formative years, developed through the educational process and fully hardened in an individual’s inter-relationships with others within a certain socio-economic context.

So it’s very easy to talk about Changing Attitudes. The question is... how?
usai den tie cow
Presumably the All Peoples Congress has realised that the Attitude of ‘usai den tie cow, nar dae for eat grass’ and the attitude towards mass looting of State Resources are wrong and need to be changed.
disassociate

Politically it is impossible for the Ernest Koroma Administration to denounce either Siaka Stevens or J.S. Momoh - under whose regimes these attitudes became part of the national consciousness.
But let’s hear less about ‘ruling in the style of Stevens or Momoh’ - because Stevens and Momoh were a Big Part of the problem we face today.
preaching and practicing

And it’s not sufficient for the Powers That Be to preach to us; they must practice what they preach.
All this talk of Changing Attitudes is also so much Hot Air if the material lot of the people is not improved.
reality of life

Social existence determines social consciousness. Not in a simplistic fashion.

But if you expect a government labourer paid Le80,000 a month to change his attitude towards stealing state material when he sees his boss the Permanent Secretary on ten times his income, doing the same - then you are really living in cloud cuckoo land.
Altering the relationship of power and disparity of wealth between classes in this neo-colonial set-up is surely the only real way ‘attitudes’ will be changed.
And this is a Revolutionary Project... one which the

APC is not organized to engage in...
Where are their cadres? Where is their ideological base? Does anyone in the APC have an precise idea of exactly how to go about changing these attitudes they are bemoaning?

We very much doubt whether this is so.
In any case attitudes cannot simply be changed at the whim of those in power.

If the APC wants a change in Attitude it must be prepared to empower workers and women. It must produce an ideological blue print on exactly where they intend to go with the Attitudinal Change Campaign.

are you ready?

And, most importantly, it must hold itself to the standards it sets for the public; and not just talk down to the People from the comfort of air-conditioned offices and jeeps.
The Nation is prepared for a Change of Attitude gentlemen. But how far is the APC?

In those days of the cold war era, political killings were commonplace especially in socialist and communist oriented countries. Forna's brain power and integrity could not be questioned but like great thinkers and practitioners before him, their utterances and the stance they took which were at variance with the status quo were suicidal and they became martyred.

Maybe the new APC should build a statue in remembrance of his sacrifice and bravery. But what about Ibrahim Taqi? He also suffered a similar fate. I believe the late John Bangura too cannot be ignored.

President Koroma is closely related and associated with late Forna's wife, Yabome. Perhaps Kabs can take it from there and suggest to the president that a statue be erected in memory of the late Dr Forna. How about that, Kabs?

Dr. M. S. Forna's letter of resignation to Prime Minister Siaka Stevens in 1970.

12 September, 1970

Dear Prime Minister (Siaka Stevens),

In 1967 Sir Albert brought this country to the brink of political and economic disaster. All right thinking people realised that Sir Albert's insatiable desire for power and wealth spelt chaos and complete disruption of our social fabric. What he wanted to impose upon this nation was a one man dictatorship, shrouded by a fraudulent Republican Constitution that concentrated all powers in the hands of a single person. In view of this menace to personal freedom and economic stability, I accepted the call to service, and, left what you knew to be a very lucrative medical practice to join the fight against that political monster.
As leader of the Opposition then you spearheaded the fight against this menace. All of us who followed you accepted your profession of a deep attachment to the tenets of democracy and the rule of law. As you also know, when the Military unwarrantedly usurped the machinery of Government and imposed a Military dictatorship on the people of this country, you found me more than willing to risk life and limb to restore Parliamentary
democracy to this our beloved country.
It is nearly three years now since we assumed the reins of Government. Over this period I have had the opportunity of working closely with you. Many mistakes have been made during this period but till lately I had assumed that these were mistakes of the head and not of the heart. I now know that I was wrong. You have revealed an uncanny dexterity at manipulating weak and untutored minds both at Cabinet and Party levels. Your conduct of state affairs is in line with your Trade Union experience, a mixture of trite jokes cajolery and even violence. The introduction or the continuation of cold and calculated violence into the politics of this country poses a major threat to the social and political unity of this country. You are fully aware of the events I refer to. The shootings at the Freedom Press with the resultant death of an innocent child have never been investigated to the satisfaction of the thinking public. The wanton destruction of life and property at Ginger Hall during the Freetown City Council elections was as unprovoked as it was unnecessary. As usual the innocent, the very innocent children, were the sufferers. Again the nation has waited in vain for an explanation. More recent, but no less serious, are the dastardly events at Port Loko. The heinous crimes committed there I put squarely at your door-step. I know, as you do, that you were the evil spirit behind them. I have spared no pains both in and out of Parliament to condemn the use of force and violence as a means to power. This is one fundamental area of disagreement between us.
A Constitutional Review Commission has been set up. It is now at work. In the interval, with you presiding, a so-called National Executive of the APC passed a resolution in favour of an Executive Presidency with all the powers of the state in the hands of one man. You yourself have never hidden your ambition to be such a President. You set the ball rolling at the meeting I refer to. I vividly recall the continuous tussle between you and Protocol Officers about the playing of the National Anthem for you. His Excellency the Governor-General has on more than one occasion been subjected to serious embarrassment as to the use of the National Anthem when both of you attend the same functions. This display of infantile vanity may appear trivial, but to me with a trained medical mind, they are the manifestations of a megalomaniac syndrome. It is the top of the iceberg submerged below a sea of personal shyness. This coupled with an insatiable thirst for power can only spell disaster to this country. I now realise that no method will be too mean for you to achieve this goal. On my return from the USA and Britain I made my views on this matter very clear to you. I made it clear, that should you insist on this course of action and bring a bill to Parliament based on an Executive Presidency I will have no choice but to oppose it with all the forces at my command. As usual with you, the answer to a major issue was not enlightened discussion but the over-used joke.
I have noticed that our differences over financial policy have deepened with time. The Cabinet reshuffle of May this year was precipitated by the refusal of the then Minister of Works and myself to sanction the dumping of six million leones of the taxpayers money in the construction of a rock filled road less than two miles long. This project, as I indicated in a letter to you, had neither economic merit nor did it stand to ease the traffic congestion which was the pretext for its conception. Suppliers credit and pre-finance have a limited scope in the public fiance of an under-developed country. Its misuse and abuse led to the near national bankruptcy of 1966-1968. You yourself have condemned the practice in your radio broadcast to the nation. I have always maintained that pre-financing should be limited to a small area of projects which will contribute to the social well-being of our people. Among this category are the provision of clean pipe borne water and the expansion of our radio services. In my discussions with World Bank and IMF officials I have indicated our general agreement with them not to engage in unnecessary pre-financing. You yourself have re-assured the World Bank along similar lines. Recently I have noticed that rejected pre-finance schemes are being dusted and brought to Cabinet without my Ministry being given an adequate opportunity to make its comments on them. During my brief absence on a tour of duty you signed a contract against the advice of my officials for pre-financing the purchase of armored vehicles costing nearly Le700,000. At a time when soldiers are badly housed I wonder whether your priorities as Minister of Defence are in the right order. The Military were never given an opportunity to say yes or no to this scheme. Recently you brought forward an elaborate scheme for police and army communication equipment. If accepted, it will cost this nation Le2.8 million. What I find curious is that the communication officers of both army and police put their requirements at Le300,000, roughly a tenth of the cost of your Pye advisers. The curious combination of an unrelenting drive to an Executive Presidency, armored vehicles to be manned by a specially selected troops primarily loyal to you, indicate that you intend to impose your will on the people of this country.
You have never failed to equate yourself with Sekou Toure, Kaunda or Nyerere. Sierra Leone is a different country Mr. Prime Minister and to be frank you are not a Kaunda or a Nyerere.
In other areas, policies are equally confused. We all know the repeated use of troops and police for the eviction of the stranger elements from Kono, but as the country knows this has become a cyclical exercise. You drive them with fanfare but quietly allow them to return for reasons that you alone can understand, There is no coherence in Government policy, no definitive co-ordination of Government policies, no firmness in the execution of Government policies. Your Kono exercise cost this nation Le600,000 extra for the army and police in 1969. The bill for the latest exercise is still to come. In the meantime most of the Lebanese expelled by this exercise have now been allowed by you to return. If our scanty resources cannot be used to create gainful employment for our people, then, as I have always pointed out to you Sir, we are now witnessing in the form of highway robbery. These are problems that will not be solved by armored vehicles or over-expensive communication equipment.
I have written at length so that the nation will understand. I am painfully aware that my resistance to these schemes has not gratified me to you. Yet I owe it to myself and to my country to do my duty as I see it.
I had intended to attend the very important meetings of Commonwealth Finance Ministers at Nicosia and of World Bank and IMF at Copenhagen, but I am reliably informed of your intention to withdraw my accreditation to these conferences on your return. The honour of this country is a matter of supreme importance to me and I would not allow you to ridicule this nation now as you have done in the recent past.
Finally, let me warn the nations of the World that should their citizens allow you to embark on a pre-finance spree in the terminal days of your regime this nation reserves the right to disallow these debts in the future.
With all these strains and fundamental differences on principles and policies I realise that my usefulness in this Government under you has reached a low ebb. I cannot sacrifice principles for position, but as I always say, let history be my judge. I therefore wish to tender my humble resignation as from today.

Yours sincerely
(sgd.) Dr. M. S. Forna

I have often entertained the idea that every cabinet minister in post-war Sierra Leone needs to attend a workshop and pass an examination before assuming his ministerial responsibilities. Such a workshop should be structured to teach presumptive ministers everything expected of national leaders, the limits of their powers, and the relationship that MUST exist between cabinet ministers and the PEOPLE in a democracy. Reports that Sierra Leone's Foreign Minister, Madam Zainab Bangura, recently flew into a rage and ordered her staff to reject every edition of the "Awareness Times" newspaper at her ministry, left me wondering whether our leaders know what is expecting of them in a democratic dispensation. In democracies, national leaders see themselves as the people's servants, while dictatorships produce self-absorbed rulers who see themselves as feared overlords. The Foreign Minister's anger was apparently ignited when the Awareness Times newspaper published an inelegant comment she reportedly made about China's suppression of Tibetan dissent. Realizing the diplomatic foolhardiness in her comment, the Foreign Minister quickly backpedaled by letting the Ministry of Information say that her words were "over-editorialized." It must be said, in Zainab Banguara's defense, that the contours of international politics can be so tortuous that diplomats run the risk of making Freudian slips during a vexatious crisis. Once a diplomat realizes that an enunciated statement runs contrary to what his government wants him to say, the diplomatic blotch is usually glossed over by claims that the reported comment was 'taken out of context." Zainab's "mistake" can therefore be overlooked by letting her climb-down with the explanation that her comment was "over-editorialized."

The Foreign Minister's sin lies in her pomposity, indeed her political crudity, in assuming that she is too supreme to be critically analyzed by a Sierra Leonean newspaper. Banning the Awareness Times from the Foreign Ministry building is an anomaly belonging to the days when single-party politics allowed cabinet ministers to behave as though they were kings ruling serfs. When Ekutay bloomed like green grass in the rains, cabinet ministers close to the president became quite unaccountable to the people of Sierra Leone. Zainab Bangura must be confusing the Ekutay era with democracy's hour. Besides, a woman like Zainab Bangura who made a lot of populist noises in favor of civil rights during the days of military rule, cannot convincingly explain why she must now behave like the soldiers she once criticized. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs belongs to the people of Sierra Leone. The building is not the Foreign Minister's personal bungalow. In a well-seated democracy, Zainab would have been in so much hot water that scurrilities from the opposition and civil society could force her to resign. As if to embarrass the president, the foreign minister chose to be politically crude just when the administration is preaching gospels about the need for a "change of attitudes" in Sierra Leone. The president needs to clean house by checking the behavioral patterns of cabinet ministers who do not know the simplest democratic fact that leaders are paid to be the people's servants. Zainab Bangura sounded too boorish when she banned a national newspaper for publishing what was rightly supposed to be discussed in public. A huffish foreign minister lacking the temperament to work in a liberal, political dispensation will easily mistake democracy for the days of Ekutay. Zainab Bangura needs a workshop to remind her that she is a Sierra Leonean servant that can be criticized, ridiculed and even heckled, by the people in whose name she is paid to be a foreign minister.

Zainab has all rights to reject or accept any medium in Sierra Leone. If a newspaper like awareness times which is notorious in promoting the SLPP party because of contracts and money given to her and blindly covering the faults of the party. Why should Zainab encourage sycophancy and irresponsible journalism when the APC is forging ahead for development? It is high time Sierra Leoneans separate the sheep from the goats if we are to realize development, oneness and progress.

It is not hidden that Awareness Times is surrounded by sycophants, provocateurs nd saboteurs of the APC government. Therefore, any prudent person will not encourage their self-styled journalism without caution. It is the ashes that Awareness Times have thrown that is besmearing them.

Larry, the 300%-fold increase in the price of rice can only be considered an "adverse development" in the eyes of the consumers, and not in the eyes of the producers.

Imagine if we had fully developed our potential in this sector, using the expertise we already have in rice farming, this price increase would have served to buttress the economy of that nation.

Remember that the rice fields in AL, Louisiana, NC, SC, Texas, and MS, were intitially cultivated by our folks during the slave trade. Thus, the folks in SL have a lot of experience in growing this staple food.

The land is there to cultivate - Baatti, and bolilands, but our governors NEVER saw it fit to invest in the exploitation of this commodity to its fullest extent possible. Thus, we / they go to bed hungry sitting in the midst of very fertile lands.

The farmers currently involved in this activity are assured of making quite a bit of money during harvest time. Maybe they'd be patriotic enough to leave some of the rice in SL, as opposed to selling all their wares to the Liberians and Guineans. I would not blame them otherwise. The incentive of making lots of money is always a very strong driving force behind these activities, so I would not blame them that much.

The consumers who cannot afford rice at this price should cultivate alternative sources of this carbohydrate / starch, like casava, sweet potatoes, coco, and yams, perhaps.

It would be very prudent and beneficial for the current GoSL to empower the indigenes relative to this agricultural sector. There is a lot of money to be made here. Educate the populace, and show them they can become very wealthy in this regard.

Let them ask Bra E's dad. He would tell and show them.

Further research tells of an old time song by Ebenezar Calendar:

Nar Man go tell Tangainse oh, Hol an fast.
After the secont world war, the country was a paradise for the tourist industry. Transportation was mostly by rail, so songs like these were popular.

In those days, "battah" specialist, Peter Nar Leppet was the man you don't want to leave out in your bachelor's eve party. The eve of the wedding, usually a Friday is when the gumbay sounds will be rolling and the omole and other goodies crossing.

Stand against, meaning "stand against" - stand firm, thus "tand gainse" - "timap trong", "hol'am fast" in creole.

Song continues:

Oh ya Lucie Ay,
Oh ya Lucie ya
Fire my motor, tourist

Nar man go tell you
Tangainse oh Hol' am fast.
Nar so you do me oh

President's Confidant, Alpha Kanu, Implicated in Massive Ministry of Health Drug Contract Scam- World Bank is Unhappy
3.29.2008

FREETOWN: NEW PEOPLE CORRESPONDENT: Our correspondent is currently following this story after leads from World Bank officials that they are unhappy with the way the government of Sierra Leone has handled the contractual arrangements for the supply of drugs to the Ministry of Health. So far, competent sources reveal that Presidential and Public Affairs Minister and the president's confidant, Alpha Kanu, has been involved in a scam deal to foreclose all other contracts for the $4million World Bank Contract. Sources close to the ministry reveal a tussle by health ministry officials and Alpha Kanu.

Details are still thin. But our correspondent has so far discovered that World Bank did give $4million as country support to be used to pay a pharmaceutical company that will supply the Ministry of Health's cost recovery programme. The procurement and tenders group within the ministry, led by Mrs Fatmata Mustapha, opened the bids and unaware, or perhaps not being told that Alpha Kanu had eyes on the $4million or had ear-marked his own supplier, awarded the contract to the lowest bidder, IMRES. IMRES is a medical supplier based in Holland. IMRES had submitted a bid of $2 million which means that the Ministry of Health could save about $2million which could be used in other sectors under the terms of agreement.

In comes Alpha Kanu with a Nigerian Pharmaceutical company, EMZOR, which had been among the companies submitting a bid. EMZOR had submitted a $4million bid and they had been virtually assured by the President's man, Alpha Kanu, of a reasonable cut. In spite of the official APC muscle from Statehouse and a personal directive from State House that the contract must be given to EMZOR, the contracts committee in the Health Ministry, with the support and advice of the World Bank representative, decided to award the contract to the lowest bidder as provided for in the tender guidelines - which was IMRES in this case.

A third group of bidders is a Sierra Leone diaspora group which had been assured by some Diaspora appointed ministers that they will prevail on the president to make it possible for them to get the $4million contract. They are said to have sent one of their representatives to Freetown who had meetings with Ministry of Health officials and also at State House.

After the award of the contract to IMRES, an angry Alpha Kanu called senior officials of the Ministry of Health wanting to know why the contract had not been awarded to EMZOR as they had been instructed to do by State House. The officials tried explaining that they had no control over the tender process and that it was a transparent process monitored by World Bank officials. An angry Alpha Kanu berated the officials as saboteurs of the government and that he would personally see to it that they were disciplined. Alpha Kanu then subsequently called the Establishment Secretary, Dr. Sandi, and asked him to send a list of names of Ministry of Health officials on immediate leave. The New People correspondent has been unable to reach the Establishment Secretary's office, but a telephone call with an official in the office revealed that indeed some people had been asked to go on leave. When asked why the officials had been sent on leave, the official said that he had no further statement to make.

A determined Alpha Kanu has continued his insistence that the $2million IMRES contract, which is lower, must be cancelled and replaced with the $4million Nigerian EMZOR contract, representatives of whom are business associates and personal friends of Alpha Kanu. This insistence has left Dr. Soccoh Kabia in a quandary as he is unsure about what to do. According to the contractual terms with IMRES, supervised by the World Bank, Dr. Kabia cannot cancel the contract or the World Bank may withdraw the grant. He has refused to comment on the matter. However, competent sources close to Dr. Kabia point out that he may delay the IMRES contract by 3 months while trying to create a further side contract with the remaining $2million for EMZOR.

Whatever the situation, Alpha Kanu is determined to come out of this with a contract for EMZOR. This latest corruption scandal is a repeat of the Electricity contract. The World Bank had originally granted the contract to Global Trading. Alpha kanu and his Nigerian cohorts (with the full knowledge of the President), also contracted Nigerian outfit, Income Electrix. Alpha Kanu's shenanigans and his unseemly practices make the president's attitudinal change campaign ring hollow.

Oh! Alpha Kanu has always been a Wheeler-Dealer. Does anyone remember his notorious petrol deals with Late AKT's brother from Texas ? His office at Charlotte Street--Marong House used to be the haven for crooks and slimy characters all jostling to line-up their pockets. Some of us have long held this view that should Alpha be let anywhere near EBK, he will totally 'hoodwink' the prezzo.
Alpha comes across as a polished con-man and prezzo is not as 'exposed' as him--hence the complex..There is no-way prezzo can relieve this guy of his post---far too scared to do that.

Monkey no ba lef in black 'an---like the monkey,so Alpha...

Alpha Kanu is a well known con man. Beside all other things, how can you entrust the country's medical business in to the hands of Nigerians? Knowing very well who these people are, they will be supplying fake medication to the country. We know these guys want to amass wealth, but not to the detrements of our people.President Koroma may have good intentions, but those bad guys around him are definately going to make him look bad in the eyes of the International community in general and word bank in particular. President Koroma's weakness is going to show in this type of sensetive issues. You guys can have your cuts in other areas, but dont mess with the country's health business.

There was an argument about current VP, Sam Sumana's studies in Minnesota. Since the internet has brought the truth to the mouses of our keyboards, I decided to access the website the said institution the VP may have studied.

Someone was knocking chest at an earlier thread that the university website carries info about him and his present achievement. I checked out the website out of curiosity but the search engine came back with no results. I wonder if anyone has any confirmation to these claims.

Attitudinal Change in full gear in Sierra Leone

By Karamoh Kabba and Sidie Yahya Tunis

Sierra Leone is rapidly becoming an open society: First were the widely praised free and fair elections in 2007 followed by the signs of the slow-but-sure progress in and around the country.

Very unlike its pre and post-war regimes and governments, the citizenry of this small West African nation’s lips are bustling with words that are only characteristically true of an emerging open society. Here, ministers and government officials now speak critically of their own administration in frantic efforts to bring President Ernest Bai Koroma’s “Attitudinal Change” proclamation into reality.

But the President who knows too well of the mostly bad attitude citizenry towards socio-economic development laced presidency he won in 2007, indeed, wasted no time in zeroing in on changing the attitude of the people through Attitudinal Change – his newfound philosophy to engage their full cooperation in governing them in high gear.

And based on the momentum the Attitudinal Change Campaign is gaining here, it suffices to assert safely that many Sierra Leoneans think alike with the President – that a change of attitude is the most likely answer to the question of how to remove the country from its unchanging position at the bottom of the UN-Human Development Index.

On Wednesday 25, 2007, politicians, ministers, the police, the military, members of the civil society, and the press corps gathered in the ambience of Miata Conference Hall for the launching of the first consultative meeting of the Attitudinal Change vision.

Indeed, signs of bad attitude are legible everywhere across the nation. For example, here in Sierra Leone, it is common to see the people refusing to queue for the simplest services while those in authority bulldozing themselves ahead of them for priority services.

There is no denying then that the president’s Attitudinal Change vision is the answer to the question; “What is wrong with Sierra Leone.”

And this is what the attentive presidential and public affairs minister, Hon. Alpha Kan responded to when he tapped on Dr. Michel Sho-Sawyer to help. Michel is a vibrant young man whose activities with Youth for Sierra Leone Improvement (YSLI) helped many Sierra Leonean youths in the United States with self-reliance, self-determination, nationalism, allegiance, patriotism and civic competence.

Michel, who is also big on driving his main points through dramatization presented kids, ranging from 5 to 7-year olds, who said “no!” to corruption, robbery, hatred, and double “No!” to war, “yes!” to all the good stuff and a “Yes!” punctuated with the conditional conjunction “But!” to “justice for all” in an entertaining dramatization that kept the audience spellbound for about ten minutes.

In his opening remarks as chairman of the technical team of the Attitudinal Change Campaign, Michel stated that despite our riches in natural resources, economic indicators labelled Sierra Leone as poor. He maintained that Sierra Leoneans must change their negative attitude to positive one, come together to uproot the invariable strong culture of corruption, divisiveness and individualism from our existence as a people.

The conference was co-chaired by Hon. I. B. Kargbo, minister for information and Alpha Kan, minister for presidential and public affairs. Hon. Kargbo stated that government would ensure that the President’s Attitudinal Change philosophy does not fail because there are many reasons for us to change our attitude. He emphasized that the President’s Attitudinal Change is not a political party philosophy; it is not a police or military philosophy, that, instead, it is a philosophy for all Sierra Leoneans. Kan who is sometimes called the man of languages made a statement in Russian, which he translated as, “He who does not work does not eat” in hammering down a point that Sierra Leoneans need to change their attitude towards agriculture to ensure food security.

Hon. Kargbo introduced Vice President Sam-Sumana, commenting, “we have reached the height of the program.” And VP Sam-Sumana in turn acknowledged the slow socio-economic development in the country and emphasised the need for Sierra Leoneans to change their attitude to ensure socio-economic growth.

Abdul Tejan Cole, head of the anti-corruption commission, stated that we inherited most of our problems from colonialism and that we have done little or nothing to change in over forty years of gaining Independence. He agreed with the President that Sierra Leoneans need an attitude change if the culture of ingrained corruption must be trashed out.

The conference reached its real climax when the chairman opened the floor to general contributions. And honourable ministers in attendance argued and deliberated openly and freely amongst themselves as to which way forward.

Indeed, deputy minister for trade and industry, Hon. Mabinty Daramy, correctly reminded conference participants of Chinua Achebe’s question for Nigeria in one of his renowned essays; “What is wrong with Nigeria.”

Like Achebe, Daramy posited, “nothing is wrong with Sierra Leone.” She maintained that amidst abundant natural resources, many rivers, equal sunshine and rainfall; “all we need is to change our attitude towards moneymaking,” she said.

Alhaji Jalloh, minister for mines, argued for living wages for workers if the people must salvage corruption to which Kan fired back, stating, “Government wants to do just that, but there are no funds.” He reproached the mines minister; “what is your ministry doing in reviewing the 3% royalties the extractive industries give government for the natural resources.”

Hon. Raymond Kabbia and the Inspector General (IG) got their own share of the argument when the former spoke passionately of an incident at the Lumley Beach on Easter day, in which a European’s camera was snatched away while the police stood by. The latter responded at the least opportunity with the microphone, saying, while every one was in Easter frenzy he policed the entire country including those in the presidential entourage. He also admonished Sierra Leoneans to change their blame-game-attitude and expressed surprise at the fact that Raymond would use one isolated incident to decry the entire effort of the police on a busy day like Easter.

One contributor held that “a healthy population is a productive population” attacking the labour laws. He explained that contractors take billions of leones in government contract but fail to provide as simple as rubber boots and gloves for their employees who mop floors on which thousands of people tread everyday. The deputy labour minister did not only agree, she said that her ministry would review the labour laws and enforce laws that will ensure employee safety.

I must say this before I leave: Those Sierra Leoneans that criticise their government from afar must now be informed that Michel, who is also the Director of Diaspora Affairs at State House, is on the verge of creating a truly open society of Sierra Leone in which every one’s nonsense ([NON][SENSE]) counts.

If you asked him/her to speak the native language, each word might come out as if there is an es at the end...............MPIARIS..........SEHKEHS.........TOPIAS ENDEHRAS. It is a common mindset that a temne man will start dombolo (start a riot) in a minute. (2)When a lohkoh man is refined, he will tell you that he is a temne man. (3) A mende man can't have a conversation with his mende brother, without switching between his tribal dialect krio and english. When you are having a discussion with an educated mende man, make sure that you have a dictionary nearby. If you are dating a mende woman, make sure you are eating heathily, and taking vitamins. Word from the grapevine is that, you will definitely need them. It will be too much pressure to bear, being known in the Sierra Leonean community as a one-minute man. (4) A foulah man prefers his future wife to be a virgin, so that he would be the man who pops the cherry. If that condition is not as it is expected to be, then a chicken has to save the day; and some of its blood smeared on the sheets. Of course the bride's family has an esteemed reputation to maintain within the foulah jamat . I have heard that the groom has to carry the bride on his back, at some point during the wedding ceremony. (5) It is said that if you are starving, and your immediate survival depends on eating some food as soon as possible, do not go looking for it at your krio friend's house. While he is eating, and you are foaming from the mouth with hunger almost passing out; he will rather give you a newspaper to read (giving you a preview of the most interesting story in it), other than offering you a spoonful or two, of whatever he is eating. There was talk, i don't know how true it is, about the creole belief that in Sierra Leone the pecking order is "After god you have a krio man". There is also the notion that when a krio man is retiring from a job, his son will be taking his place, who will be replaced by the grandson after many years down the road. (6) If you are a christian man with an eurocentic or biblical first name, and you intend to marry to a woman from the fourah bay or Foulah town communities, be prepared to take up an islamic first name as a condition for the wedding to take place. It happened to a fellow who taught at the Prince Of Wales School. Frobay pipul den go heng kaftan pan you en gee you marabu name ma, befoe you marraid den pikin. (7) I have been told that if you invited a limba man to your joyous occasion, stocked with the best wines and hard liquor money can buy, make sure that you provided well chilled mampama on deck also. Or else your limba guest will call it a night very early. There are others for sure, but i will save them for some other time..." Reformer, according to CandidO.

It has been suspected for a while that casino's dull your senses.. I even hear it’s willful so you can spend the months mortgage payment and fell like you had the time of your life.. I do hope your sojourn at the Taj Mahal took the mortgage and not the senses..
I digress................................

Fen Plaba....if SLPP rag sheets report about the SLPP HQ raid by APC marauders was bais..and it was all partisan.. and foaming at the mouth drivel...

What would you call "COCORIOKO" reporting the beating of Tom Nyuma as an assassination attempt nipped in the bud?
And why would you take the assassination attempt hook, lies and stinkers.. and offhandedly dismiss the grievances of the SLPP..

Numerous..ones..

"Also, even as President Koroma was being sworn into office, his supporters were busy vandalizing the offices of the SLPP in broad daylight, and in full view of the police"
From Berewa's security detail been manhandled.. to his personal bodyguard been arrested on a gun charge..

SLPP HQ looted.. in FT, BO...
SLPP Ministers under virtual country arrest..
SLPP Appointed termed/contracted officials fired..
SLPP leaning civil servants purged...
SLPP stronghold votes annulled..
SLPP ...........

If anyone else can find a few more..please post...
These are all legitimate grievances by the other side and should be taken seriously...

Health Minister And The World Bank Drug Supply Contract.....Foul Play Suspected
Posted by on Mar 30, 2008, 02:09

Dr. Soccoh Kabia may not be the suitable individual for the position of Minister of Health, but for political expediency and in fulfillment of what politicians perceived as “in house” arrangement between the two political leaders of the APC, Ernest Bai Koroma and PMDC Charles Margai, five ministerial positions, deputies and Ambassadorial appointments have been dished out to the PMDC party. Although President Koroma has signed a contractual agreement with the ministers and other political appointees, yet their actions smell nothing but corruption and self seeking desire aimed at amassing wealth within the shortest possible time frame.

At the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, strange things are reportedly taking place involving the Minister and few government officials attached to State House without the knowledge of the President, but whose name and position are being used to define and sealed contract deals beneficial to these government officials.

The World Bank contract for the supply of drugs is currently being traded allegedly by Dr. Soccoh Kabia and the Presidential Affairs Minister Mr. Alpha Kanu, the latter a notorious and well known mafia who has been operating various syndicates for quite a long time now in the airline industry as well as in other business areas.

The trio reportedly traveled to Nigeria few days back on mission purely known to them. Fingers are pointing at them that they went to interact with the owners of Emzor, a pharmaceutical company that submitted bid for the World Bank Contract to the tune of $4 Million. Whether it was to give them assurances that they are the lucky winner or not, could best be explained by them, if questioned by the president.

Their return to base after the brief visit is now an unfortunate story to tell as Mrs. Fatmata Mustapha and her cabal had already awarded the contract to Imres under the pretext of been the lowest bidder in the sum of $2 Million.

The shock and disappointment has caused the trio to fight back, using the Establishment Secretary Dr. J.F. Sandi to crucify some senior members at the Ministry of Health by sending them on an immediate leave, because according to them “others from above” want the contract to be awarded to Emzor and not to Imres that has been benefiting from similar World Bank contracts for the past five and more years since the days of the NPRC to the SLPP and now the APC government.

The award committee comprising Michael Dauda of the Local Government Finance Department, Bassie Turay, Director of Drugs and Medical Supply, Albert Patewa, Management Accountant of the Ministry of Health, Henry Kuyembeh Procurement Manager, Dr. Pat Robert, Director Primary Health Care are no strangers to Ministry of Health contracts, and how to back date and change dates on contract documents for their clients to emerge victorious.

It would appear that the fight is still in progress as the Minister, sources say is demanding that Imres should commence the contract after a period of three months not now, while thinking of ways to appease his new found Nigerian friends and some Sierra Leoneans resident in America who were interested in the World Bank drug contract.

What has now become a puzzle to unravel by some members of the public is the Imres affair, the champion in Ministries of Health, Agriculture and Defence contracts over the past years.

I was reliably informed by my history teacher at Grammar School that the word 'Tangains' started out refering to less progressive and old fashioned people who would vote against progressive policies in early Sierra Leone (colony days). They voted (in barray's under a mango tree for instance)by standing up against whatever policy was tabled. The would "Tan" "Gains" (ie STAND AGAINST) became a derivitive negative term attributed to those old political fuddy-duddies that constantly voted against the more progressive motions fielded during those times.

This is how 'Tangains' was born.

Mr Truth,
Being a VP of Sierra Leone is not an achievement at all; but a trigger for future embarassments! I am at the door of becoming a worldbank executive officer; this is achievement!
I have given up! I will never reply to you! You liar! Sam Sumana never went to college! Tell me the exact link! Why should you lie? Colleges out here never have anything to do with the statuses of their alumni in African politics. I would have abused you had it not being that Mr. Kabs intervened!

If nonentities like you are those the world bank chooses as executives,
then I now have a clearer idea as to why most of their projects end up
being failures.
Once again, check the alumni page at www.metrostate.edu. If I knew

You call Yenga a tiny piece of land, how dare you? Listen, any illegal occupation of even a refuse dump site anywhere in Sierra Leone is an occupation of our entire country, get that! You say am setting the tone for war? Put it this way, gone are those Tangains/CAVEMAN days when any Twala will just march into any village unopposed and scare everyone off, claim it and turn it into his kingdom. Like Emerson rightly said, those days are gone!

Just read our Chief Surgeon Dr Ernest Bai Koroma aka Rogue Traders lips here. "if after such sacrifices made by the settlers for this Nation to get electricity, anyone raised a cutlass against them in their new homes, such person would find himself and his small cutlass facing big guns wielded by the Government."

Now, if our President is prepared to use his big gun against his own people. Why is his government scared to issue the same threat to foreigners who are illegally occupying our land? Typical Sa Lone man cowardice. When it comes to our own people, we treat them with such ruthlessness, but always fly the white flag when dealing with Foreigners.

Like the slpp Bobson broke ose, he will bulldoze Pa. Bongos house at hills station for what the slpp term as ENCROACHMENT. But the deputy defence minister Joe Blog won't dare scatter those pehtehteh hip by the thieving Guineans. If your apc TASK FORCE can terrorise the people of Bo for spraying graffiti on your party leaders photo, beat a clergyman for being disrespectful to his younger brother, and even threatened to strip naked a baboon at Cotton tree. Then why not ask them to pelt those thieving Guineans off our land?

And you accuse me of being an slpp wolf in sheep clothing? Well, i prefer to be a wolf in sheep clothing, than an ekutay Brownie in military Fatigue parading as defence minister. But again am not surprise, like uncle like nephew. A boys scout who was made Maj. Gen. true tribalism and sycophancy. Who upon hearing an armoured car tire blow up, yes tire fire, put on his kak Bobbie, wore a girdle, wig, mistook a lady Diana for a leather boot and ran away. Even the kindergartens were laughing at his cowardice. Hence their remix of the famous nursery rhyme, hey diddle diddle. Which they ended like this, "and Josephine ran away to Guinea" What a bunch of Cowards!

His act saved many lives and allowed Straaser and co to control. When your tribal party got the chance to forgo power, what happened lots of people were burned and massacred and prominent Sierra Leoneans languished in jail and died prematuredly after they were released from Pademba Prison.
Yenga issue is complex. It needs diplomatic manoevoures to counter. After all both countries have shared common identity. Guinean madingos, fullas and Susus can become Sierra Leoneans.
So the best goal is to talk to Lansana Conte. Britain has given millions of pounds to make our army a professional force. Unless you shy from away from the truth. But the army has a professional face as was manifested during the last elections.
The SLPP never unite the army and today, we have a defense Minister who has the necessary bacground to reshape the army.
The army was never an Ekutay entity. If it was so, the NPRC coup would have never succeded. Palor is a decent nationalist.

As an independent voter, I have watched from afar as Mrs. Clinton distinguished herself as an effective legislator from N.Y. It seems obvious that Senator Hillary Clinton is a politically astute legislator who understands how to fight for her priorities and help to shape voter perceptions on issues she sees as important. She is especially fierce when it comes to dealing with those she characterizes as the "right-wing conspiracy" ...including the Republican "machine."

To counteract the Right-wing Machine, Mrs. Clinton and her husband, have built a Clinton Machine... which seems to this independent voter as every bit as hard-nosed and dedicated to beating the "right-wing" as they are to beating her. The Clinton machine can match the Right-wing at every level...hitting back mercilessly when attacked and working the "system" to gain every advantage in what both sides think is a struggle for America.

But, it is not a struggle for America.

They engage in a struggle to win - at all costs.

It is a struggle to crush the other side.

Forged in the self-inflicted wounds of the 1990's they fight for survival. Both sides - angry and dug in.

Well, I am tired of this zero-sum approach to national politics.

I'm tired of Tom Delay and Dick Cheney, and yes - I'm very weary of the Clintons.

The real goals of both the Republican and Clinton machines are simply irrelevant to our national purpose. Mean and angry - red states and blue - they split the nation in half along ideological positions and we go absolutely nowhere as a nation in tough times.

To them it is always "payback time."

Furthermore, these ideological warriors are ignorant of our true American national promise ... a people united to make our country healthy, strong and good for our kids. We can be tough on defense and kind to each other - at the same time.

We've just seen what happens when one side suddenly gets into power...the neo-con driven approach to Iraq has failed miserably because the warrior camp under Cheney and Rumsfeld had no thoughts beyond the first step - crushing the enemy. (Now Patreaus is tamping down violence - but for how long - and then what? Just pull out?)

I fear the same will be true if the Clinton Camp returns to power...swept along by the nation's disgust with the Bush administration. The Clinton pendulum will swing too far in its quest to crush the enemy... it will alienate the 50.1% American who voted Republican in the 2004 election.

Left to her own devices, and without her deep-seated anger, Hillary might be a good President -but she will never, ever be left to her own devices...she is part of the machine warfare that practices what might be characterized aptly as the politics of ideological rage.

Furthermore, she thinks that she has to prove to us that she's "tough" - so much so that she has imagined sniper bullets in Bosnia and breaking down borders in Macedonia.

And then there is her husband, the former President, who seems destined to play the "Cheney role" in her administration.

He's gone over the edge -unrestrained by the limits of his former Office, he is degenerated into a mean spirited "attack" dog for the "machine."

Yes, he's now smiling and bowing and apologizing...but Bill Clinton wants to win - at any cost. And that motivation includes crushing Obama - if he stands in the way.

A Clinton Presidency will just add to the politics of hate and rage that is poisoning our national political dialogue. A Clinton Presidency will merely add to the level of nastiness that have caused many, many elected officials on both sides of the aisle to attempt to distance themselves from the machines.

That's exactly why more folks like me are independents.

In this first decade of the 21st Century, highly partisan politics is not going to help America, either domestically or internationally.

We need to disarm the haters - take away their raison d'êtres. We need to get beyond the "conspiracy wars" of the 1990's.

I think that we need to thank the Clintons for their service, let Hillary go back to the Senate where she can craft major legislation, and Mr. Clinton can go back to his private affairs - and stay out of the White House.

With due respect, (and I voted for him - twice) the Clintons are from the past.

We have been looking for a new direction and a new energy. Let's look beyond the Clintons.

Provisional Results Show Opposition Leader Ahead in Zimbabwe’s Elections
By Peter Clottey
Washington, D.C.
31 March 2008

Supporters of the leader of Zimbabwe’s main opposition Movement For Democratic Change (MDC) are reportedly celebrating in major cities what they describe as a convincing victory in last Saturday’s general elections. Provisional results so far released by the electoral commission suggest opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai is in the lead with incumbent President Robert Mugabe following in second place.

But the government earlier warned the opposition to be cautious in their claim since the rest of the results are yet to be released. Some opposition supporters are expressing fears the government could rig the rest of the results to hand victory over to incumbent President Mugabe.

Gordon Moyo is the executive director of Zimbabwe’s Bulawayo project, a non-governmental organization. From the commercial capital, Bulawayo he tells reporter Peter Clottey that Zimbabweans are ready to fight for their victory.

“The results that we have receive indicating that the opposition is very likely to get a landslide victory in these elections for Morgan Tsvangirai, it will be a whitewash for Robert Mugabe. The results show that the MDC faction led by Morgan Tsvangirai has got the upper hand in the urban areas, in the rural areas in the former strong holds of the ZANU-PF so far show that Morgan Tsvangirai is very popular and is winning the election,” Moyo noted.

He said there are a few more areas where elections results are yet to be declared.

“But what is said is that so far there are some other constituencies from Rural Mashonaland, ZANU-PF has not given us the figures. We think that is where they are going to cook the figures; we think that is where they are going ton play around to overturn the electoral victory for the MDC,” he said.

Moyo described as improbable news that incumbent President Mugabe would accept defeat in the elections.

“It is highly unlikely that Mugabe is going to accept defeat. There are two things that he is going to do; firstly he is rigging the elections in the rural areas, the elections have been done already, but they are trying to rig the figures so that they may either have more than Morgan Tsvangirai at the presidential level. Or they may create a situation whereby there is a run off. In fact they may have lowered their standard. Initially, they thought they were going to win the election or they will rig it so that they win the elections. But because of the sheer support that Morgan Tsvangirai has received from across the country… shows that it will be very difficult for Mugabe to rig the election or to steal it,” Moyo pointed out.

He said Zimbabweans are determined to make their voices heard.

“Certainly, the people of Zimbabwe will not let this victory be stolen from them. I for see a situation whereby Zimbabweans are going to defend their victory. I for see a situations whereby the members of parliament of the MDC who in my view are going to be far, far more than two-thirds majority, I don’t see them going to parliament if Mugabe steals the election. We are going to have stand still country whereby the opposition will say no to the electoral theft, whereby the members of parliament will not go to parliament to legitimize the Mugabe illegitimate victory,” he said.

Meanwhile Incumbent President Mugabe says he will accept the outcome of Saturday’s elections if the opposition wins the required over 50 percentage points.

Both local and international observers have reportedly declared the elections peaceful and credible.

Why is Alpha Kanu, the swindler and conman , allowed to have access to financial contracts and transactions ? Is the government not afraid for its reputation ? Is President Koroma really serious ? Health Minister And The World Bank Drug Supply Contract.....Foul Play Suspected
Posted by on Mar 30, 2008, 02:09

By Phillip Neville

I am perplexed ! I was hoping that for a LAWYER to characterize a news as "good news" he should first have a "blue print" of how this "self sufficiency" is to be achieved. Then, his next duty is to examine the blue print and see whether it is attainable or not. If it is attainable then, and only then, can the LAWYER characterize this news as "good news...OH, I was just reminded that the LAWYER is a die-hard APC man!

I like you am dog tired of news from home which falsley raises our hopes only to find out that it was all just merely talk. Yes I am a supporter of the APC but make no mistake that I will criticise the APC if I feel that they are not serving the people in the manner that we all expect and that was promised. If you have had the opportunity to read some of the things that I have commented on since the APC came to power you would have realised that I do not fit the mold of what you may describe as a "Blind supporter".

Now go take a chill pill and lets find "real issues" to discuss not this crapola that I sense you want to spend precious time on. Lets talk about the supposed awarding of contracts for medicines and Pharmaceuticals in sierra leone and the Brouhaha that has consumed it and how the government can remedy this. How can we advise the government on what steps it can take to remedy this issue. Is sierra leone ripe for creating its own pharmaceutical industry? ("God news indeed...") here, by definition, you are actually agreeing, without any concrete evidence, that what the writer or minister said is good. How do you know that the news is good without examining facts and figures first?

("...A closer review of my statement would show that I am sceptical of the so caled "God news" which is why I asked that a news conference be set up so that the Minister can show us how he intends to achieve his goal...")
...and this is exactly my point...let the Minister explain it first, then, and only then, can you call it "good news". Health Minister And The World Bank Drug Supply Contract.....Foul Play Suspected

One of my pastime, call it hobby, is the STUDY OF WORLD RELIGIONS AND ORGANIZATIONS. I am almost at the completion of this very CHALLENGING, STIMULATING, INFORMATIVE, EDUCATIONAL, PERPLEXING,AND REWARDING EXERCISE.

...BUT, I am very perplexed at this stage of this exercise when I asked myself the question as it relates to the various churches and its relationship to the judgment day; the question is "SO, WHICH OF THESE CHURCHES/ORGANIZATIONS IS THE RIGHT CHURCH/ORGANIZATION. So, since many heads are better than one, Dear Forumites, here are the churches/Religions :

(1) ANGLICANISM

(2) BAPTISTS

(3) CHRISTIAN SCIENTISTS

(4) CHURCHES OF CHRIST/ UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST

(5) CHURCHES OF GOD

(6) CONFUCIANISM

(7) DAVIDIANS

(8) EPISCOPALIANS

(9) FUNDAMENTALISTS / EVANGELICALS

(10) HOLINESS

(11) JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES

(12) JUDAISM

(13) LUTHERANISM

(14) METHODIST

(15) UNITED MEHODIST

(16) MORMONS

(17) NAZARENES

(18) PENTECOSTALS

(19) NON-DENORMINATIONAL CHRISTIANS

(20) ORTHODOX

(21) PRESBYTERIANS

(22) QUAKER (SOCIETY OF FRIENDS)

(23) ROMAN CATHOLIC

(24) RASTAFARIANISM

(25) THE SALVATION ARMY

(26) SEVEN DAY BAPTIST

(27) SEVEN DAY ADVENTISTS

(28) SECULARISTS

(29) SEVEN DAY CHURCH OF GOD

(30) UNIFICATION CHURCH OF GOD

(31) "ADEJORBE"

Probably the list could continue, but for the sake of brevity, I will end here. Now, questions begin to flow; all these churches have different beliefs otherwise they would have the same name. Obviously one of them MUST be the right church, but which one ? This also mean that the followers of 30 of the above 31 churches are obviously going astray. SO THEN, IN THE FINAL DAY, FOLLOWERS BELONGING TO THOSE 30 CHURCHES WILL INEVITABLY PERISH. I DO NOT KNOW IF I AM IN THE RIGHT CHURCH MYSELF, DO YOU ?

What you have outlined are man made denominations. For example, I grew up Lutheran which is a break away denomination from the Catholic Church. This was because of the disagreements about doctrine that could not be resolved and this produced the Lutheran denomination. There is no reference of any of them in the bible (none that I am aware of anyway). If it's not in the bible, that lets us know it's not important and God will not "judge" us for them since they are not based on His word. Salvation as I understand it is based on ABC or Admit that Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior, Believe that He died for your sins, and Confess that you are a sinner. I think the best way to know if you are in the right church is to know and study the bible yourself. Is you church's teachings based on the bible? Are you growing spiritually as a result of being joined up with this body of fellow believers? Did you go through some type of new members class to teach you about the church's doctrine or what they believe so that you could make sure it was biblical? Lastly, you mixed Christian as well as non Christian organizations. I am speaking strictly about Christian churches since I don't have any understanding of the non Christian organizations.

Side note: A couple denominations I didn't see on your list include-Church of the Brethren and The mennonites

The right Church is one that preach and practice the true gospel, being human not withstanding.

Brother, the only way is to believe in the Lord Jesus that He died for our sins. There is no perfect Church. Join a Church that will make you GROW with the Lord. There is no perfect pastor or christian, but a true one is one that goes after the heart of the Lord.

"SO THEN, IN THE FINAL DAY, FOLLOWERS BELONGING TO THOSE 30 CHURCHES WILL INEVITABLY PERISH. I DO NOT KNOW IF I AM IN THE RIGHT CHURCH MYSELF, DO YOU ?"

I don't believe we will be judged based on the church we attend. You may attend the "right" Church but if your heart is not right with God and you have not repented of your sins you will perish.

Take care.

The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. The knowledge of God leads to a better understanding of God's personality and how to reach Him through prayer, conversation and goodness.

"In my father's mansion there are many rooms" were words from Christ. Rooms to accommodate different religions and their faithfuls who believe in the one true God, the God of Abraham. Abraham was not a christian. He was not even a Jew in the strict sense of the word. He was from Ur and his original name was Abram. Melchizedeck who was able to attain a christ-like status was also not a jew. He went through suffering and the crucibles of life to become perfect as God's High Priest and a source of eternal salvation unto men over whom he administered.

I had a conversation with the head of the Hindu religion many years ago and I asked him why they worshipped the cow as their god. He said to me that the cow was only used as the symbol of perfection since God had made it so good that every part of it was useful to man: the meat for those who eat it, its milk, its horns and hooves can be used to make gum, even its faecal matter-its dung can be used as plaster in building mud huts. So here is a creation of God symbolizing a perfect state, to the extent that it can only be representative of God's magnificence and beauty. Therefore it is a symbol of their worship. Men find it very difficult to relate to abstract things on a daily basis. Therefore visual references or images are used to keep man in constant touch with God, whatever they perceive Him to be. But I was reminded that all religions are like the little families into which we are born at birth.

As a new born the child comes to know only its mother and then other members of his/her household, and as the child grows into a boy he knows members of his community; and when he gets to adulthood he gets to know more people and develops a knowledge of the world that goes far beyond the confines of his immediate family, beyond the confines of his village, town or city, until he becomes a man of the world. He said that religions help to discipline individuals to channel their thoughts and actions towards the knowledge of God and that when that state is achieved, the true knowledge of God, religions begin to play much less a role in fashioning people's beliefs since they would have achieved the ultimate. That is, knowing and fearing God and acting according to his commandment of accepting and practising 'good over evil'. The discerment between good and evil and practising the ways of the righteous is what God wants us to do, and to glorify his name always.

I have had the opportunity of visiting some ancient stone carvings in China, depicting the Buddha and the Buddhist faith. My conclusion is that all the religions of the world tend to believe in good reward for good conduct and a hellish reward for evil conduct.

To be a believer in judaism, christianity, islam, hinduism, buddhism, etc is by circumstance; into what family or place you were born and other circumstances. But God Himself had proclaimed that achieving salvation or going to paradise is by his own choosing. Since our fates were predetermined even before we were born what happens to us can be said to be by God's choosing, save that through fervent prayer through our beliefs/religions and good deeds, a man's destiny and fate can be altered by God for the better. Interceding on our behalf on judgement day is where the prophets come in.

For on that day when the scales of good and evil are even it will be the prophets who will plead with God to have mercy.

Know that even Solomon the wise had said that nobody had gone yonder and come back. It's all a matter of faith.

Oh, my goodness ! This is truely inspirational, especially: "In my father's mansion there are many rooms" were words from Christ. Rooms to accommodate different religions and their faithfuls who believe in the one true God..."

I thank you for the education.
